Hal has been the Chief Executive Officer of Sagent Advisors since founding the firm in 2003. Prior to launching Sagent, he was a Managing Director and Co-Head of Global Mergers & Acquisitions at Citigroup Global Markets Inc. (formerly Salomon Smith Barney Inc.) from 2000 to 2003. Prior to that, Hal was the Co-Head (along with Sagent fellow founder, Joel J. Cohen) of the Mergers and Acquisitions Group at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (“DLJ”) where he played a pivotal role in building the group into an M&A sector leader. Before joining DLJ, Hal was a general partner of Freeman Spogli & Co, a merchant banking firm specializing in management buyouts. Prior to that, he was a Managing Director in Kidder, Peabody & Co.’s mergers and acquisitions department. He began his career in 1975 at Dean Witter Reynolds Inc. as a corporate finance generalist and later cofounded and managed that firm's mergers and acquisitions department. Hal has advised on over 600 completed M&A assignments during his career. He received a BA from Stanford University with a degree in Economics and holds a MBA in finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
